Beschrijving

Broche / hanger in 14-karaats goud in de vorm van een viooltje (pansy). Met lila, geel en zwart email en in het midden een oudslijpsel diamant. Gesigneerd, meesterteken onleesbaar.

 

Viooltjesbroches hebben zoals veel juwelen uit de laat-19e eeuw een verborgen betekenis. 'Pansy' klinkt vrijwel hetzelfde als het Franse werkwoord 'penser', wat 'denken' betekent. Juwelen met viooltjes werden vaak aan geliefden geschonken, als je er één kreeg betekende dat dat de gever altijd aan je dacht. Geëmailleerde vioolbroches zoals deze werden eind negentiende eeuw voornamelijk gemaakt in Engeland, Frankrijk, de VS en Duitsland, door makers als Cartier, Krementz, Whiteside & Bank, Hedges & Co en anderen. Tijdens de daaropvolgende Art Nouveau-periode werden de meeste geëmailleerde vioolbroches gemaakt in de VS.
